1910s PHOTO ALBUM Put together by a WOMAN, FARMING. 7″ x 11.5″ photo album assembled by a young woman described in captions as “myself”, born c. An impressive collection of 325 family photographs with 42 leaves/84 pages; inside front covers also utilized. There isome chipping/folding but overall, in good condition; several pages loose from binding; one page partially torn off, but fully present. The album binding strong: cover worn, somewhat frayed but still rigid. There are captions throughout, identifying persons or scenes (“Horses in Winter 1919″). Town gatherings, sledding, early automobiles, farming scenes, and a couple of children’s portraits have been hand-tinted. There is no geographical identifier, either in photos or captions. Given the possibly Scandinavian tone of some of the names, it is quite possibly Minnesota or the Dakotas. One partially obscured sign might say’Des Plaines. There are photos of a flood through the town, marked 1918; several portraits of soldiers in uniform, indicating military service, plus a simple procession through town with banners and bunting, with kids in tricorn hats indicating support for France? , possibly commemorating Armistice Day. The family who form the subject of this album seem to have been successful farmers – an impressive tractor is presented in one photo, and in another, a large greenhouse. One page is described with the header:’This is a found film’, rather cryptic – unclear if strangers are depicted, or’myself’s’ own family, from an earlier time.
