Offered is an original cabinet photograph depicting the legal tender office building in Tomichi Colorado. I believe the legal tender building might have been similar to the assay office. Originally known as Argenta, Tomichi (Indian for Hot Water) once had a population of 1500 people but a snow slide in 1899 took the entire town away! Tomichi had prospered in the late 1880′s but when the panic of 1893 hit, the town almost died. By the end of the century is was experiencing a comeback when the avalanche hit. At that time there were only six people there, and four were killed by the slide. It is now a ghost town. At the juncture of East River and Copper Creek, north and west of Ruby, the town of Gothic was incorporated on July 17, 1879 when large silver producing mines, such as the Sylvanite, attracted near to 5,000 miners and settlers. Near the headwaters of Tomichi Creek, along the Continental Divide, the towns of White Pine, Tomichi, and North Star, the last to be opened by the 1879 rush, sprang up with in four miles of each other. The towns’ short lived heyday came as a result of a large influx of prospectors interested in the area’s rich lead and silver deposits. In this image a group of men in suits stand outside the building. There are also many pack mules, a horse and a dog. The image is 5″ x 8″ and 6 ½” x 8 ½”.
