Grapefruit Moon Gallery recently acquired an unusual and important collection of photographs, proof sheets, negatives and transparencies from the estate of Peter Basch – the famed and well regarded artist whose work is familiar to collectors of erotic pin up and Hollywood Glamour photography alike. A full biography of the artist can be found below. ITEM: This is a vintage and original mid-century portrait photograph of a Las Vegas showgirl who worked at the Sands Hotel’s Copa Room (the showgirls were known as Copa Girls). A relaxed and casual view of the young beauty in her kitchen smoking a cigarette and reading the newspaper. An image published in Coronet Magazine, this “fly on the wall” view of the life and daily routines of this showgirl is a bit of a departure from Basch’s exceptional work as a nude fine art photographer but is still an amazing mid-century offering. Photograph comes from Basch’s personal collection. Measures 10 1/2″ x 10 3/4″ on a glossy double weight paper stock that has been mounted to an 11″ x 14″ board. Basch’s ink stamp and handwritten notations to verso. Below are a few of the folders from this collection all filled with photographs – this photo shown above like all of these listings are straight from the Peter Basch archives. CONDITION: Fine condition with some corner and edge wear and a spot of soiling to the curtains on the right side of the photograph. Please use the included images as a conditional guide. No rights are included in this offering. The artist was born in Germany, the son of Austrian parents famous in the German film industry. His family moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s where worked as the assistant of Laszlo Willinger. In 1945 Basch moved to New York and built a successful career as a magazine photographer even as he kept a foot in the film industry working with directors from Elia Kazan to Jean Luc Goddard. He produced photographs of many celebrities, artists, performers, dancers, actors and glamour-girls in America and Europe. His work could be found everywhere from Life to Playboy and he was a mainstay in the figure and men’s magazines and pin up calendars of the era. He photographed many of the most prominent stars of the 50s and 60s. The photographer was innovative in the moving Hollywood portraiture from the highly formal glamour views popular in the 1930s and 1940s to a more expressive style, in which stars such as Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Grace Kelly, and Catherine Deneuve were photographed in a more natural and personal manner. His work has been exhibited internationally, and a series of books were published showcasing his risque, nude, erotic and figure photography. The most colorfully titled of these, and a phrase which perfectly sums up the artist’s illustrious career is Put A Girl In Your Pocket: The Artful Camera of Peter Basch.
