We are showing all of the photographs to guarantee authenticity. All of the photographs were bundled together under the one page cover sheet titled “Island Scenes” and we knew we had found a treasure. (The actual beige cover Island Scenes for all of his work is not included in this sale) We do believe the print featured for sale here is a gelatin silver print, because most of Sperr’s prints were created in this manner during this time period. This is an original, hand signed work by the Photographer in ink, on the actual photo. Most of his prints are now part of Museum Collections and part of the NYC Public Library Collection that are no longer for sale. If you collect old photographs and love old Manhattan, this is a must have for your collection. We have included some additional information below about the Artist. Sperr’s 1937 book, “Island Scenes, ” included 130 Staten Island images. The society notes that the book’s introduction includes his description of Staten Island’s natural features, ongoing industrial development, and the photographer’s expectation of more dramatic changes when industries have taken hold of the salt meadows and the remaining farmlands have been divided among the cottages. ” The society considers its Sperr collection 3,100 film negatives, 14 glass-plate negatives, and 2,089 photographic prints “an important complement to the extensive collection of (his) photographs held at the New York Public Library. All of the negatives are dated, with locations identified, in Sperr’s own handwriting.
